Become A Serial Reader

The Become a Serial Reader Book Club reads classic works of literature as they were originally published – in serial form in monthly or quarterly installments..

Oliver Twist book club

Learn about Charles Dickens

Starting in April we will be reading Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. Oliver Twist is “The adventures of the orphan boy who is forced to practice thievery and live a life of crime in nineteenth-century London.” (from the MORE catalog) It was originally published as a serial in monthly installments from February 1837 to April 1839 in the magazine Bentley’s Miscellany.

We will be reading the 1839 edition from Project Gutenberg Since this edition is from before 1923, it is out of copyright. The text has been copied into 24 documents which correspond to the 24 original installments. Two booklets a week will be available at the library.

We will meet Monday nights at 6 p.m. on Zoom to discuss the reading from the previous week. The first installments will be available at the library on Monday, March 27th.

NOTE: Patrons from other public libraries are welcome to join the club! Contact Trevor Richards at trichards@amerylibrary.org to arrange to get the weekly installments.

On March 31, 2025, all Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) employees were placed on administrative leave, with access to their work systems blocked. The President replaced the agency’s leadership with the Deputy Secretary of Labor. Without leadership and staff, it’s expected that library funding will be halted.

This action puts crucial services at risk across the country—and especially here in Wisconsin. Federal law requires IMLS to provide support to public libraries, but that support is currently only guaranteed through September 2025.

Why IMLS Funding Matters to the Amery Area Public Library:

IMLS funds support BadgerLink, the state of Wisconsin's online library, currently available for free to all library users.

IMLS funds help support digital literacy efforts and access to free wifi and public computers to the Amery community, a real lifeline in rural communities where internet access is spotty.

IMLS funds help pay for staff to have required continuing education trainings. This allows us to spend more of our budget on materials and services.

IMLS funds support the ILL loan program, allowing patrons to access materials unavailable in the MORE catalog.
